Weaning from the pacifier?

My son is 9 months old, and ONLY has a paci when he goes to sleep (naps and bedtime). I plan on weaning him from the bottle at 12 months, should I wean him from the paci at this time too? I definitely don't want a toddler that runs around with a paci in his mouth 24 hours a day...no offense to anyone, but that just drives me nuts. But I don't want things to be too abrupt for him, either....any advice?
