What "stuff" do I use to paint-sculpt on canvas board?

I want to put a pair of mittens on a canvas & cover them w/gesso, gel medium, spackel, paint, something. I don't know what to use to make the mitts look like they've be sculpted from the canvas. I want this to have deminison & texture. I new to art, so all ideas are welcom.
